Review of X-Men First Class

Every saga has a beginning. Before they were a team, they were outsiders. Under the guidance of young Professor Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr, X-Men First Class is born. It is a prequel to the original films and it tells the story of how Charles, played by James McAvoy, and Erik were friends before they became mortal enemies. The setting is the early 1960’s during the Cuban Missile Crisis where Sebastian Shaw, played by Kevin Bacon is pulling the strings between the soviets and the USA so he can start World War Three. He is the leader of an evil band of mutants called the Hellfire Club who are set on world domination. An agent for the CIA named Moira MacTaggert, played by Rose Byrne, wants to recruit Xavier so he can help stop Shaw. Xavier and Erik, who later becomes Magneto, work together to recruit and train the team.

January Jones plays Emma Frost, Shaw’s trusted advisor. Jennifer Lawrence plays Mystique and Zoe Kravitz plays Angel. As an added bonus, two other members of the X-Men franchise make a surprise appearance. Directed by Matthew Vaughn and produced by former X-Men director Bryan Singer, this is one of the best films of the year to me. The origin story of the X-Men is so important to the fans because they never got the chance to explain it in the original trilogy. The cast for this film was amazing, and the special effects were spectacular. This is a pure summer blockbuster which rose to the occasion and exceeded all expectations. I hope the studio goes ahead with a sequel because there is still a lot to tell about the early battles with the X-Men and Magneto’s Brotherhood.

I give X-Men First Class ten out ten, as well as five out of five stars. What do you think about this movie? Did they pick the right people to play these roles? Was it better than the original trilogy? Send us an e-mail and let your voice be heard ryan@therpmshow.com
