Review of the New Hawaii Five-O

In the last few years, networks have tried to reboot such classic television shows and failed. Perfect examples are NBC’s Bionic Woman and Knight Rider that only lasted one season. Now CBS is trying their hand at it and I think they got it right. Hawaii Five-O is back after the original ended more than thirty years ago. It stars Alex O’ Loughlin as Naval Officer Steve McGarrett who is the leader of an elite task force who fights crime in Hawaii. He is joined by Detective Danny Williams (AKA “Danno”) played by Scott Caan, Chin Ho Kelly played by Daniel Dae Kim, and Kono, who is Chin Ho’s cousin, played by Grace Park.

Alex O’ Loughlin has a history with CBS, since he was the star of Moonlight and Three Rivers both of which were axed after one season, but now he has found his niche in my opinion. Scott Caan has been in all three Ocean Eleven movies, Gone in Sixty Seconds , and Ready to Rumble . Daniel Dae Kim is no stranger to Hawaii, as he played Jin on ABC’s LOST, and Grace Park has a lot of experience on television from when she was on SyFy’s Battlestar Galactica .

In the pilot, we learn about how the team comes together. McGarrett comes home after the death of his father John who was shot and killed by his enemy Victor Hess, who is the leader of a terrorist cell that he has been tracking for five years. So at the end of the pilot, he finds his father’s killer and he kills him with the help of his team who also stopped a human trafficking operation in the process. Now CBS got it right here; this re-imagining of Hawaii Five-O is so much fun to watch. The interaction between McGarrett and Williams is good to see because Williams always has something funny to say. The way they shoot this show is amazing, the way they showcase the island for what it truly is just incredible.

This is one of the best pilots of the fall and I recommend that you tune in for this one. I give Hawaii Five-O four out of four stars. With this show you get great action, clever dialogue, and a beautiful location to boot. What do you think of the new Hawaii Five-O? Is this a good reboot? Was it the right time to bring it back, or will it get worse over time? Send us an e-mail at ryan@therpmshow.com. Don’t miss all-new episodes of Hawaii Five-O every Monday at 10/9c only on CBS.
