The Secret Circle Review
The supernatural genre never gets old. After the success of CW’s The Vampire Diaries Executive Producer Kevin Williamson decided it was time for a spin-off. Based on the books by L. J. Smith, instead of vampires this one is all about the witches. It’s called The Secret Circle, which centers on a teenage girl named Cassie Blake played by Britt Robertson from Life Unexpected.
After her mother suddenly dies from what she believes was a tragic accident, Cassie moves in with her grandmother who lives in a small town. Once there she meets some new friends at school who tell her that she is part of a secret coven of witches dating back to the 15th Century. Who said starting over was easy? At first Cassie is skeptical to believe anything they tell her. But she soon realizes that maybe she does have powers of her own. The leader of the circle is Diana, along with bad-girl Faye, Adam played by Thomas Dekker who was previously on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. As well as Nick who lives next door to Cassie, and Faye’s friend Melissa played by Jessica Parker Kennedy who guest starred on Smallville. Together the six of them are strong, but not everyone is a team player. And, some don’t play by the rules. Each of them has lost a parent but for different reasons. In the end Cassie finds a book that belongs to her mother, and she starts to question if her death was really an accident.
At first I thought it was too soon for a spin-off, especially one for The CW. But, after watching the pilot I am curious to see how far they take this series. I think the premise is a good start, and the people in the cast are all in some way considered veterans in their genre. I give The Secret Circle three out of a possible four stars. And, I think it’s a good companion to The Vampire Diaries. All-New episodes air Thursdays at 9/8c on The CW. What do you think of this show? Was it the right time for a spin-off? Or are we past the whole vampire/werewolf/witch phase? Send us an e-mail ryan@therpmshow.com
